The Surrounding Area – Abergavenny

Abergavenny, or Y Fenni in Welsh, is just 4.5 miles from Millbrook Cottage. Abergavenny is a bustling market town with a large covered outdoor market and a busy cattle market; there are regular produce, craft and antique markets held in the large Market Hall depending on the day. Abergavenny is a favourite base for walkers, fishermen and canal enthusiasts, and there is a good leisure centre and museum. It is surrounded by green mountains and hills including the Sugar Loaf, Skirrid, Blorenge and Table Mountain.

Roman Abergavenny may well lie below the medieval castle, which with its gatehouse, motte and bailey is situated on the south west side of the town. St. Mary’s Church has notable 15th Century choir stalls and a grand recumbent figure of the Jesse Tree carved in the 15th century together with superb 13th and 15th Century effigies in wood and alabaster.
